General Hospital Exclusive: Adam Huss Weighs In on a Nikolas Cassadine Return and His ‘Unfinished Business’ in Port Charles

Adam Huss

If General Hospital has taught us anything, it’s that no Cassadine exit is truly final, which makes Adam Huss’ thoughts on a Nikolas return especially intriguing.

His character is currently serving time in Illinois at Flatland Prison off-screen, but Huss is well aware of the chatter “that Nikolas is being mentioned a lot” onscreen. He tells Soaps.com that he’s keeping an “open mind” about returning to Port Charles, even though that is a decision for General Hospital‘s writers and producers.

Still, Huss was game to speculate with us about how Nikolas could “make his way back” from the “faraway jail.”

“There’s a lot of unfinished business with Ava (Maura West), obviously,” he says enthusiastically. “I would love to explore that and what’s there. I think there’s a lot with my mother, Laura (Genie Francis), that I think needs to be set right.”

Huss has also given some thought to what Nikolas might have learned while sitting in the penitentiary, pondering how to redeem himself after kidnapping of Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl) while she was pregnant with his child, Ace.

“How do we keep him from going back to his old ways that got him out of there? So, maybe it’s smart to keep him off-screen for a while [to reflect on] the series of events that led him into a corner,” he explains about Nikolas finding a way to redemption.

“How do you get this character out of there? And so now, somebody comes back reformed,” Huss continues. “That’s a really wonderful thing to play that challenge of ‘How do I still fight for all I believed in, but do it with this moral new moral compass that will keep me out in jail and out of making the same mistakes.’”

It sounds like Huss has it all figured out for Nikolas to return to the Port Charles landscape, but he also understands that it’s not up to him — we just have to nudge the General Hospital team of writers.

“It’s something that I try not to think about daily, but he [Nikolas] is always right here in my heart,” Huss says with a smile. “I’d love to step back in whenever the timing is right.”

Nikolas Cassadine has a lot of life left to live outside the walls of Flatland Prison.
