Rumors have been swirling about the possibility that Suzanne Rogers could be leaving Days of Our Lives after having played the iconic role of Maggie for over 50 years. While earlier this month we talked about ways Maggie might head out of Salem, a rep from the Peacock soap has addressed those ramblings and confirmed to Soap Digest that neither Rogers nor Maggie is going anywhere.
That’s music to our ears as we couldn’t imagine Salem without Maggie. Rogers has been the only actress to play the character since 1973 and during an interview with Soaps.com, she recalled her very first day on set and how decades later, she’s still on the soap. “Well, the first day on the set I was so nervous,” Rogers shared. “I was so nervous. And John Clark, who played Mickey, I said, ‘I’m so nervous. I can’t,”” to which he replied, “Use it. Just use it. Because you will always be nervous about something so just use that.”
And that’s exactly what she did and now 52 years later… well, it worked! “And that’s why I say I’m still — I get nervous because I want to do good and I don’t want to hold up the company,” she continued. “I’ll hold up my other actors. And I want to come in prepared. So I always am a little nervous. And I’m an A personality. So it’s like kind of comes in the family, if you know what I mean.”
In thinking about what has surprised her most over the years, Rogers told Soaps.com, “Oh, well, the fact that I was still here after 50 years. The fact that the fans liked the character,” plus, “The fact that I knew what I was doing. And, I don’t know, just that I love my job. You know, the saying is, if you love your job, you’ve never worked a day in your life.”
