A Historic Milestone: ‘Beyond the Gates’ Secures Its First-Ever Win at ‘Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards’
After recently celebrating its first anniversary, the CBS daytime drama Beyond the Gates took home Essies Choice Award at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards.
The series was nominated alongside other television series including Tyler Perry‘s Beauty in Black, Forever, and Reasonable Doubt, the later of which recently won Best Drama at the NAACP Image Awards.
Now in its 19th year, Essence Black Women in Hollywood celebrates Black women who are shaping the future of television and film through their work both in front of and behind the camera.
Actress Tamara Tunie and Sheila Ducksworth, executive producer on Beyond the Gates, were among those who attended the event.
Ducksworth wore a tailored caramel-colored pantsuit, pairing the blazer and trousers with a fitted black top. She completed the look with leopard-print pointed-toe heels, adding a subtle pop of pattern to the outfit.
Tunie opted for a monochromatic white ensemble featuring a structured blazer with shimmering sequins detailing along the shoulders and sleeves.
Showrunner Michele Val Jean confirmed the news on social media, posting a photo of Ducksworth and Tunie accepting the award and thanking the fans who voted for it.
In addition to the Essies Choice Award, this year’s ceremony also honored several prominent figures in entertainment including actress and producer Kerry Washington, actress and director LaTanya Richardson Jackson, creative executive Zinzi Coogler and entrepreneur Chase Infinitie, along with the cast of Sinners.
In recent weeks, Beyond the Gates has also received additional recognition, including a nomination for Best Drama series at the NAACP Image Awards as well as the ACE Awards. The series also received a nomination for Best Daytime Drama at the Writers Guild Awards.
Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS with episodes streaming on Paramount Plus. The series has begun reairing from the beginning on BET each Thursday as a part of their T.G.I.G. (Thank Goodness Its Gates) programming block.
